REAL NATURAL STONE AROUND THE FIREPLACE

Slate-Lite around the fireplace area

For fireplace walls, stove back panels and decorative surfaces around the fireplace, Slate-Lite is much easier to plan with than solid stone slabs. The material is only approx. 1.5 mm (approx. 1/16") thin, can be cut to the millimetre and adds very little weight to the wall. This means that existing surfaces, drywall constructions, niches or older fireplace areas can also be retrofitted with real stone.

Technically, Slate-Lite is suitable for many applications around fireplaces: the stone veneers are heat-resistant up to 120 °C (248 °F). The standard adhesives are temperature-resistant up to 90 °C (194 °F), making them suitable for many applications around fireplaces and stoves. For higher temperatures, specific distances from the fireplace or special fire protection requirements, the project should be assessed in advance. As standard, Slate-Lite achieves EU class Cfl-s1 according to EN 13501-01 for flooring, or B1 according to DIN 4102; on request, a special composition up to fire class Cs3d0 is possible.

How to install Slate-Lite around fireplaces and stoves

1. Check the application area
Slate-Lite is heat-resistant up to 120 °C (248 °F) and is suitable for many decorative surfaces around fireplaces, stoves and fire areas. The distance from the heat source, substrate, adhesive and fire protection requirements should match the specific fireplace or stove situation.

2. Prepare the substrate
The surface should be solid, dry, clean and load-bearing. Suitable substrates include plaster, plasterboard, cement-bonded boards, tiles or other stable wall surfaces.

3. Plan the surface and cut to size
Define the sheet format, joint pattern and connections in advance. Slate-Lite can be cut with a hand-held circular saw, table saw, jigsaw or multi-tool. Cut-outs for stove pipes, sockets, edges or niches can be adjusted to fit.

4. Use a suitable adhesive
For installation around fireplaces and stoves, the adhesive must match the temperature exposure. The standard adhesives are temperature-resistant up to 90 °C (194 °F); for higher requirements, a suitable special adhesive should be used.

5. Bond the sheets
Apply the adhesive evenly, position Slate-Lite, press it on and align it. Thanks to its low weight and thickness of only approx. 1.5 mm (approx. 1/16"), even larger fireplace surfaces can be designed comparatively easily.

6. Finish edges and surface
Visible edges can be sanded or finished with suitable profiles. Depending on the level of use, impregnation or sealing may be useful so that the natural stone surface is easier to clean.

The result: a fireplace cladding made of real natural stone – thin, lightweight, individual and much easier to install than solid stone slabs.
